Glossary of Terms
6-second Billing
TMC offers true 6-second billing where most companies bill by the minute or have
call minimums associated with their billing. You'll save money with TMC since you're
only being charged for the increments of time you spend on the phone.
ANI
ANI (Automatic Number Identification) is the ""telephone number"" transmitted through
the network that provides the receiver of a telephone call with the number of the
calling phone.

Competitive Local Exchange Carrier
EUCL
End User Common Line charge. An amount charged by your local phone company for providing
local phone service.
Interlata Call
A call that originates in one and terminate in another Local Access and Transport
Area (LATA)
Interstate Call
A call made between states (crossing a state line)
Intralata Call
A call that originates and terminates in the same Local Access and Transport Area
(LATA).
Intrastate Call
A call remaining entirely within the boundaries of a single state.
IXC
Interexchange Carrier. Abbreviation for any long distance carrier. IEC is another
abbreviation.
LATA
Local Access and Transport Area. States are divided into areas called LATA's. The
Lata boundaries determine which companies handle your short (calls to points within
your LATA) & long-distance (calls to points outside your LATA) calling services.
Refer to your local telephone book for LATA boundaries.
LEC
Local Exchange Carrier is the term for a public telephone company in the U.S. that
provides local service.
LOA
Letter of Agency. A letter exchanged between telecom companies, or between a customer
and a telecom company granting permission for the receiver to install telecom service
to the sender.
Local Call
Any call made within the local service area of the calling phone. Individual local
calls may or may not cost money. Check your local phone book for a breakdown of
these areas.
NPA
Numbering Plan Area = area code
PIC
Primary Interexchange Carrier. The PIC is a four digit number used as the identifier
for your local carrier as to who your long distance carrier is, ie. 0432 = Qwest
PICC
Presubscribed Interexchange Carrier Charge. A fee assessed to long distance carriers
on behalf of the Local Exchange Carrier for using their network to terminate calls.
Service Provider
Any company that is authorized, by local, state, federal, or other governmental
authorities within the area served by the NANP (North American Numbering Plan) to
provide communications services to the public.
T-1
A digital transmission link with a capacity of 1.544 Mbps (1,544,000 bits per second).
T1 lines use copper wire and span distances within and between major metropolitan
areas.
Toll Free Call
When you place a call using a toll-free number, i.e. 800-XXX-XXXX, you are not charged
for that call.
Universal Service Fund
Every phone user pays a FCC mandatory surcharge to ensure that everyone, no matter
where they reside, can have affordable service and rates.
Universal Service Fund Fee
A required contribution to the Federal Universal Service from all telecommunications
companies that provide service between states, including long distance companies,
local telephone companies, wireless telephone companies, paging companies, and payphone
providers.
Zone Call
Calling areas outside of what your basic charges from your phone company cover.
They are defined in the front of your phone book and usually have a cost associated
when you call in that area (or zone). These are not considered long distance so
your local phone company bills you for them. |
